Food waste is an overwhelming problem in our society, today. Nearly 40% of the food grown in the US is not consumed and is costing a lot of money and resources. US grocers discard $10 to $15 billion in unsold produce every year. Unsold fruits and vegetables account for a big part of wasted food in grocery stores. We must focus on prevention in order to contribute to the solution to this crisis.
What is ethylene and how does it affect food? Fruits and vegetables produce a naturally occurring hormone called Ethylene. In addition to controlling several aspects of the normal growth and development, ethylene also induces natural ripening in fruits and vegetables. In fact, a number of fruits and vegetables emit small amounts of ethylene gas during their ripening process. Ethylene gas is also found in automobile and lift truck emissions, smoke, fluorescent lights, plastic, and decaying fruits and vegetables. These emissions lead to an increased level of ethylene gas in the air. This in turn threatens the life cycle of post-harvest fruits and vegetables. No level of ethylene gas in the air is considered safe.
Here are the benefits of DX Ethylene Eliminator: 1. Eliminates decay, mold, discoloration, wilting, softening, scalding, loss of crunch and many other negative effects caused by ehtylene gas. 2. Use during post-harvest handling to slow down the ripening process of fruits, vegetables and flowers. 3. Use during domestic and international shipments traveling via ocean, truck, rail and air. 4. Use Ethylene Eliminator Paks during cold storage to preserve freshness. 5. Non-toxic, chemically inert, can be disposed of as normal waste. Sachets are wrapped in Tyvek. 6.
